His dreams have been described as a place for artists, the heavenly  sip of a coffee, and a background of dreamy songs. Indeed, he is a person who makes SOME-THING all the time, as his nickname implies.

NOVAsia’s Senior Editor, Minhye Park met with Byung-hyun Lenny Lee, a.k.a. Lenny Makes SOME-THING and learned his secrets to live the SEXY life he wants. The first part of these two part series will look at his work adventures at start-ups.

Byung-hyun is now working at one of the most creative companies, Zero Ground as a Director.

[Byung-hyun and Zero Ground]

Tell us about yourself.

I am 35 years old and live in Hannam-dong in Seoul. I now work as one of the directors at a company called Zero Ground. I am interested in this and that, so I literally try anything I want. In my opinion, I am a very normal person.

Tell us more about your company, Zero Ground and your company’s project, Palette H.

Zero Ground is a prop-tech company which received a lot of attention when the concept of ‘sharing economy’ was introduced. It is a company that aims to create value based on space. In fact, the name ‘Zero Ground’ means bare ground. We say ‘Zero to One’ as our business purpose. Mathematically turning 0 into 1 is relatively simple, but it is not simple in terms of human affairs. Our aim is to create trends based on our ideas in an empty space. The company is not big yet, but we were provided with seed money in our early days and new investments are about to come in. So, the company is growing relatively fast.

‘Palette H’ is a source to create dynamic values of prop-tech, and one of our first trials is hairstyling. As you know, a palette is a space where one puts various colors of paints which become materials for drawing. With that concept in mind, Palette H is a place which hair designers with different colours can access and become genuine hair designers by discovering their unique brand and colour.

What is your company’s vision for “shared hair salons”?

Nowadays, people’s needs have become diversified, and one spares no effort in finding the best hair designer that suits them. Hair salons have become more than a place to change one’s hair but a place to develop one’s unique style. So, I think hair salons can be understood as human management in the future and ‘shared hair salons’ is an effective platform for this new trend.

What do you want Palette H to be?

I hope the brand Palette H and what the name stands for can expand to become a place where different people can showcase their unique identities. My team has thought hard about the  characteristics  and possibilities it should carry and these three key words come to mind:

First – “Progressive”: The ability to change and expand.

Two – “Flexible”: The ability to be a flexible environment where diversity is respected and anyone can express their opinion.

Three – “Delicate”: The ability to  develop a delicately refined system.

The goal is to combine these components together in the future.

Palette H’s first branch in Gangnam.
What does a Director’s week at work look like?

At the moment, our first branch is not fully optimized, so Directors also take turns working at the store. In my case, I spend more time at the Palette H store than in my office. From Monday to Thursday, I work at the store and focus on sales with staff. We have 15 designers and one of them makes a group of 5 designers. Including staff, I manage more than 20 people. While working here, I have been updating a manual to optimize the place. My other responsibility is designer sales. When designers interested in Palette H visit the store, I conduct tours, consult, and arrange contracts. We also have a cafe in our store, so I communicate with customers from a third person’s point of view. Finally on Friday, I work at my office to develop more ideas and report and share them with other directors. This is how my week goes.

“Sharing Economy” is a new concept in Korea. Other than shared hair salons, in what other areas do you see potential?

What I am now interested in is related to my lifestyle. I am planning to move out from my parents’ house, so I have an interest in shared houses. While shared houses are quite literally shared spaces, I know of many companies that have been trying to interpret the concept of shared houses in their own way. So, this could be developed one step further. Also, I feel like leisure activities such as camping and pilates could be a part of the realm of ‘sharing economy’. However, as covid-19 worsens, I am also wondering how the ‘sharing economy’ will cope with this unanticipated situation.

[Byung-hyun and Coffee]

Before you transferred to Zero Ground, you used to work for another start-up company, Kino Beans where you ran a cafe at your alma mater, Sogang University. What were you responsible for at Kino Beans and how has that experience help you?

I have to briefly explain what Kino Beans is. Kino Beans is a company that earns revenue through coffee, food, and self-produced culture content and by supporting businesses or people who are working in the cultural content  industry. I was in charge of finding such businesses that we could financially support, and communicating with artists, film producers or people in charge of film festivals. Sometimes, I even directed content. Like Zero Ground, I worked on human resource management based on space. By taking on many roles, I think I have become able to analyze and gain insight from different points of view, as compared to people who work in one specific area, and this helps my current work.

As a place designer, every small detail was completed through the intermediary of Byung-hyun.

Also, I am a believer of culture being the most significant part of communications. I experienced many subcultures through Kino Beans. I came to understand people with various backgrounds and it helped me work in a completely different area of business: beauty.

I read an interview article featuring Zero Ground’s CEO, Kim Young-wook where he said he puts special concern for selecting coffee for Palette H. What is your opinion on what coffee means in a shared hair salon?

In Korea, when you go to a hair salon, they automatically give you a cup of coffee. But it is usually coffee from a normal coffee machine, so one never thinks to expect high quality coffee. When establishing Palette H, we designed coffee to be a medium of  communication with our customers. This can boost the customers’ expectation towards our hair services. Our customers are served coffee before they begin discussions with designers. This type of UX (User Interface) works as a natural ice breaking and delivers our meaningful message to customers.

In one of Kino Beans’ cultural events, Byung-hyun was talking with visitors while making coffee.
As a former barista of Kino Beans, what is your favorite coffee that you can recommend to everyone?

I want to highly recommend Ethiopia’s Koke. I normally like acid coffee beans with fruit scents. Baristas often say Koke is the queen of coffee. When drinking certain coffee, the note of bitterness stands out and buries other possibilities the coffee might have. But Koke is delicate and sweet with a complex scent. To exaggerate, it feels like drinking a cup of coffee in the highlands of Ethiopia. (laughs)
