[Spotlight Interview] “I want to live a SEXY life.” Sexy Life 101 with Byung-hyun Lee (2) Fuels for Passion

Byung-hyun Lee expresses his potential freely as Lenny Makes SOME-THING.

In the first part of the interview, we mainly focused on Byung-hyun Lee’s current work and explored the new concept of ‘sharing economy’ in modern business.

However, Byung-hyun has much more to showcase. He boldly exclaims, “I will be a f****ing hot celebrity!!!” and he is already halfway there. Calling his nickname, “Lenny Makes SOME-THING” as his third-self, Byung-hyun lives an active life as a Youtuber and singer-songwriter who has released four singles so far.

NOVAsia’s Senior Editor, Minhye Park went on to explore his different fuels for passion.

Lenny was singing his song, MY LOVE, live on Youtube.

[Byung-hyun and Music/ Youtube]

You seem to be very busy already due to your work at Zero Ground. But at the same, under your ‘third self’ ‘Lenny Makes SOME-THING’, you have released four single albums. How did you get started in music?

I was raised in a music-friendly environment. My parents loved music and in fact, my father’s old dream was to be a singer. My parents had different  musical tastes, but they used to ask my opinions on their favorite songs all the time, so listening to music and evaluating the emotions they would conjure up became a natural part of my life. Somehow I think I believed I could express my emotions to the world one day, but I did not know when and how. My dream for music grew when I  met friends who did theater while studying communications at college. My music project to release albums began after I met musicians while working for Kino Beans.

What would you like to say through your songs as musician Lenny?

People actually care about others even if they do not seem to. What I mean is people are saying they do not have time to look at other people’s lives, but they all are looking at my Instagram. They define me based on posts I put on my personal accounts. For example, I am not bragging, but people say I am a progressive and energetic person who works passionately for things  that others do not. In fact, you told me the other day that you thought so too. (laughs)

But in reality, I am very delicate and sometimes timid. When I am in love, I feel so small. Like these, I have so many aspects. I do not want to close the possibility of showing these different aspects of me. So, I want to talk about many hidden aspects of me through my other self, ‘Lenny’.

As a singer songwriter, what is your motivation for making songs?

I do not have any special cause for musical inspiration. There is nothing special. When things do not go well, I think, “Oh shit, what should I do?” and find a way to release this uncomfortable feeling. Some people sit still and chill, but I need to DO something. For example, I run a lot or do some yoga or pilates. That is how I release my stress. I am that kind of person. But still, there remains something I cannot shake off completely. Writing these emotions in my personal diary is not enough. That is the very moment I make music. I want to remember this feeling of anxiety and sympathize with it. It does not have to be a full-length song. I just made a short motif. Those creative works were developed later and released into singles.

Lenny was performing at Soap Discovery in July 2019.
As a musician, what were your best and worst moments?

The best moment is yet to come, because you know I will be a F***ing hot celebrity!!! Lamenting moments are when I feel I am not enough, especially when working on my albums. When producing, I try to search for a lot of references. The more I discover others’ songs, sadly I realize I have a long way to go. There are too many geniuses. Say, when I met ARCX, my music mentor, I once thought how unfortunate it was for me to not have such a talent when I was his age. I feel sad when I make music. But I do not indulge in the sadness. Once I sleep on it, I get back to normal. (laughs)

More than a musician, you even have your own YouTube channel. How did you start it?

I did not mean to actually run a Youtube channel. There was a time when Kino Beans’ business was not working well. I felt insecure that I might not be able to grow as a person if I do not change my ways. When I looked around, everyone seemed to live their own lives well. You know, people’s lives started to diverge in their late twenties. So I started wondering whether anyone was afraid or not. I wanted to ask that question. Was I the only one feeling scared? There must be someone who thought the same way I did. So, I just turned the camera on and began asking people around me. Later I went on to meet people from different backgrounds. Asking frank questions on peoples’ insecurities and learning how they dealt or lived with them was my motivation to start my Youtube channel. I just did it.

Scenes from Byung-hyun’s Youtube channel. Through LMS People, he shared people with various backgrounds.
So, that is the start of your Youtube feature, ‘Lenny Met People’ (LMS People). That’s quite interesting.

I just wanted to have honest conversations with people about how to deal with their insecurities, or how to live with the feeling. Staying sober, without drinking.

[Byung-hyun as a Person]

So, let’s talk about you as a person now. What is the most important value for you as a person?

The values I am seeking seem to narrow down as time goes by. First, I want to live a fun life. Second, I want to be healthy. More than maintaining a healthy body, I want to have energy to support my mental health to believe in myself. I also want to be serious and consistent in one specific area, and most importantly, I REALLY WANT TO LIVE A SEXY LIFE. I can say these four are what I am looking for.

As you know, the young generation these days put stability first when finding a career. But you seemed to make so-called “brave” decisions by participating in start-ups. Was there any specific reason for those decisions?

I never believe my decision is incredible. I just made the decisions I had to make based on my situations. I like an old saying, “come empty and return empty.” That is life, but still I want to make some mark in the world. There are many ways to leave your existence by writing a book or constructing a fancy building. My way is to keep working on music and exploring fun parts of life by making unexpected choices. I am quite an adventurous person in that regard. If we have to leave this world with an empty hand, I want to make a mark somewhere. Even if one thing goes wrong, there will be something else that will go right. It led me this far. So, I am betting on my life. I feel like I am engaged in high-risk, high-return things compared to the others.

Byung-hyun has a NORMAL picture too!
What would you like to tell the young generation who are hesitant to work for a start-up?

I cannot say you should challenge yourself. It is not a joke. Working at a start-up means betting your life in the business. Like I said, I believed I could and continuously work hard in the start-up, but for some people, this has something to do with survival. You can have various perspectives, so I can hardly say “you should try this if you have a strong will.” But what I want to emphasize more is I do not want people to act based on their own definition of themselves. People form a definition or limitation of themselves when they cross 20. They just accept this definition, but I personally do not want people to do so. During your life, there comes a time when you have to make a decision which is completely not you. I just want everyone to be open to their possibilities while having strong faith in themselves at every single moment.

What is your ultimate dream as the person, Lee Byung-hyun and not as a director and singer? )

I want people to say something like this about my life: Ah, that person was super sexy. He lived such a sexy life. That is how we should live our lives too. An interesting life like his. He was good at self-exploration and he enjoyed his life. Wow, that is really sexy. That is it!

I want to take the best advantage of different aspects of my life and make events out of them. See how far little me can go, how far delicate me can go, how far my activities can take me.  I just want to show off every single bit of my attractiveness. All of these are sexy, you know.

[Byung-hyun as Lenny Makes SOME-THING]

You used to brand yourself as “Lenny Makes SOME-THING.” What is the behind-the-scenes story for this nickname?

I am a big fan of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Every time I read it, I fall in love with different characters. Liu Bei was just a mat seller but established a country in the end and Cao Cao was a child of a concubine but almost ruled the world. All characters have their own characteristics, but one thing is common. They all did SOME-THING. More than 2000 years passed, but their stories are on everyone’s lips. That is so cool. While reading it, I instantly thought I should make SOME-THING out of myself. Another reason came from my inferiority. I was short with a lot of pimples, so I was not popular among girls. I told myself that I was a cool person and there must be someone who would know my true values like in the book. So, I decided to keep doing SOME-THING all the time. (laughs)

As your nickname suggests, you seem to live as a person who constantly makes something. Your life seems to be VERY BUSY. How do you balance your work and personal life?

Honestly, I do not think my work and life are balanced perfectly. The business just started. But, I try to make some time for myself as much as possible. Like… Sunday mornings like today, I go to my favorite cafe and take some time to space out. I drink my favorite Koke coffee. After this interview, I will briefly check the store and go to Jamsil to run. I am trying to make some spaces for myself like this. In fact, this is very tiring. Sometimes, I just want to sleep at home without doing anything. But my senseless and rubbish philosophy keeps telling me life is a constant battle against hassle. At least, I do not think I am being engulfed by annoyance.

Lenny was performing to celebrate his newest album, Turn Me On, at Turn Me On party in February 2020.

How would you define your life as a creator who works hard to produce something all the time? What was your motivation for keeping it up?

Wow, this is a hard question. Well, Forrest Gump just runs without knowing the exact reason. I just want to do it. I do not know whether it runs in my family. If I think about my motivation more realistically, my father’s business went bankrupt during my college days, so I had to do something. I did three or four part-time jobs till after midnight and then went to school to take classes. Through that time, I might have developed a habit of pushing myself while taking full advantage of managing time and energy. I think the actions following these habits led to quite good outcomes.

Situations were very difficult, but I did not fall into a complete failure since I was doing something rather than staying still. I could feel there was hope to survive on many occasions. Sometimes I still feel exhausted and feel like there is nothing ahead of me. But at the same time, I have a sort of confidence that there will be unexpected possibilities for me or that  fun will follow if I keep dancing to my own beat. Because of these memories, I just keep doing SOME-THING all the time. But I am not pushing others to do so. I respect their own way.

Next year, my first regular album will be out. I am preparing for it, having as much fun as I can.

Lenny keeps saying there are different types of himself.

[Editor’s Note after the Interview]

I met Byung-hyun as my senior in college. He was someone who could see things beyond what we could have imagined at that time. I still remember how surprised I was to learn about his wit and insight during a presentation in our major course. He always glowed with his brilliant ideas. I am glad he still shines as he used to be.

From my college graduation to graduate school, I felt like I had lost something. I could not specify what that was. But after talking with him, I finally know that it is courage or bravery to act for the things that I want.

So now, I will try to learn to not hesitate. Fearlessly.
